Finding Awe (and Myself) Above the Clouds

Sometimes it takes a little distance from the noise to reconnect with what matters most — you.

Above the Clouds

Somewhere high above the clouds, on a flight to London for work, I looked out the window and felt something I hadn’t in a long time — awe.
The kind that catches your breath and quiets everything else.
The kind that reminds you how small you are, in the best possible way.

The world stretched out below — endless layers of blue and light — and I thought:
How incredible it is to still be here. Still learning. Still becoming.

Midlife has a way of grounding you — in routines, responsibilities, and expectations.
But up there, I felt something different: a lightness.
I wasn’t chasing. I wasn’t proving. I was just being.

That feeling stayed with me all weekend.

Dinner for One

I decided to give myself something rare: time.
No meetings. No plans. Just space.

One night, I took myself out to dinner — solo.
Years ago, I might have felt awkward walking into a restaurant alone.
But this time, it felt effortless. Peaceful, even.

Tucked into a window seat, I ordered an amazing seafood risotto, journaled a little, and savored every bite.
No small talk. No performance.
Just me — fully present in my own company.

Midlife gifts us that quiet kind of confidence — the ability to take up space exactly as we are.  You stop worrying about how things look and start focusing on how they feel.

The Aisle Seat, Please

The next evening, I bought a last-minute ticket to a West End show.
When I chose my seat, I picked one on the aisle — near the door.
Just in case.

Just in case I felt anxious.
Just in case I needed a quick exit.

That’s something new for me — this occasional wave of uneasiness in tight or crowded spaces.  It’s not something I ever used to feel, and I’m still learning how to navigate it.
(More on that in another post — I know I’m not alone in this, thank you, menopause.)

But here’s the thing: that choice felt powerful.
Because knowing what truly keeps you comfortable isn’t insecurity —
It’s self-awareness.

I never needed to leave that seat.
But giving myself permission to if I did?
That was freedom.

The Sweet Spot

Somewhere between that dinner for one and that aisle seat, I realized this trip wasn’t about seeing London.  It was about seeing myself.

The awe I felt above the clouds followed me — into quiet dinners, evening walks, and unexpected pockets of peace.

Because being comfortable in your own skin doesn’t mean you stop growing.
It means you trust yourself enough to keep exploring.

Midlife is this beautiful mix of knowing and seeking — grounded yet curious, steady yet open.  It’s recognizing who you are, while staying curious about who you’re still becoming.

You don’t need a plane ticket to feel that.
Maybe it’s an afternoon at your favorite café with your journal.
A long walk without your phone.
A matinee for one.
A quiet moment where you stop proving — and start being.

A Little Reflection for You

When was the last time you felt awe — the kind that makes you pause and breathe differently?
What’s one small way you could give yourself the gift of space — to just be, without performing or producing?

Midlife isn’t about reinvention for others.
It’s about remembering who you are — and giving her room to breathe.

Total U Takeaway:

Sometimes freedom looks like an aisle seat.
Sometimes it looks like a dinner for one.
Always, it starts with choosing you.
