Finding Creativity and Inspiration in Your Daily Routine

A woman happily smiles with a hair dryer in her hand in the bathroom.

Have you ever noticed how sometimes the most ordinary moments can lead to extraordinary ideas? I find this happens to me often during what some might consider the most mundane part of my routine—blow drying my hair. Yes, you read that right! It’s during these 7-10 minutes of daily hair management that I often find myself struck by bursts of inspiration.

The Soundtrack of Thought

What is it about this time that makes it so special? Is it the hum of the dryer, acting as a sort of white noise machine that blocks out the world’s distractions, allowing thoughts to flow freely? Or perhaps it’s the act of looking into the mirror, not just at the reflection of my physical self but also reflecting inwardly on the ideas floating around in my mind. Whatever the exact trigger, there’s no denying the productive power of these brief minutes.

Mirrored Revelations

Just this morning, as I maneuvered through my hair with my trusty dryer in hand, I had not one, but two “brilliant” ideas. The first was a concept for a future blog post for Total U, which I think could really resonate with you. The second was a solution to a work-related problem that had been puzzling me for quite some time. These weren’t just fleeting thoughts; they were actionable insights that could have a real impact.

Not All That Glitters…

It’s worth mentioning that not every idea generated in front of the bathroom mirror is a gem. Some are fleeting and impractical—fantastical brainwaves that drift away as quickly as they come. But that’s okay! The point isn’t to strike gold every time, but rather to foster a mindset that remains open to innovation, creativity, and inspiration, whenever and however they choose to strike.

Embrace the Unexpected

For me, the routine exercise of blow drying, with its repetitive motions and focus required, somehow manages to open up a conduit to creativity. It goes to show that inspiration can indeed strike anywhere and at any moment. You don’t need to be in a grand hall of silence or a serene garden to find your breakthrough; sometimes, all it takes is being present at the moment.

Opening Your Mind

So, next time you find yourself engaged in a routine task, pay a little more attention to the wanderings of your mind.

1. Limit Self-Judgment
  • Quiet your inner critic.  Permit yourself to think freely and explore without worrying about how “good” your ideas are.
  • Practice writing or sketching your thoughts without filtering or overanalyzing.
2. Adopt a Growth Mindset
  • Embrace the belief that creativity isn’t fixed – – – it can grow with practice (and some patience!)
  • See challenges and failures as opportunities to learn and expand your thinking.
3. Engage your Senses
  • Notice colors, textures, sounds, and smells around you.  Engaging your senses can ignite fresh ideas.
  • Experiment with creative activities that stimulate different senses, like listening to new types of music or signing up for a class.
4. Cultivate Curiosity
  • Ask “why”, “what if”, or “how” questions about ordinary things
  • Explore topics that interest you without worrying about their immediate usefulness.  Follow your curiosity wherever it leads.

The Takeaway

So, next time you find yourself engaged in a routine task, pay a little more attention to the wanderings of your mind. You might be surprised at the creativity that flows when you least expect it. Whether you’re sorting laundry, washing dishes, or filling up your tank at the gas station, innovation doesn’t wait for the perfect moment. It happens whenever we are open to receiving it.

Isn’t it wonderful to think that your next great idea could be just a blow-dry away? Keep those dryers humming, and let your mind roam free!
