Basket of health fruit for wellness during midlife

Midlife Wellness Isn’t a Crisis—It’s a Comeback (with a Little Help from Brené Brown)

Let’s get real.

If wellness in your 20s was all green juice and step challenges, wellness after 50 is more like:

  • “Did I sleep funny or is my neck permanently tilted now?”
  • “Why did I walk into this room again?”
  • “Is this a hot flash or am I being interrogated by the FBI?”

Welcome to midlife. We’ve earned every laugh line, every silver strand—and now, it’s time to rewrite what wellness really looks like for us.

And spoiler alert: it’s not about perfection. It’s about power.
The kind of power that comes from knowing yourself so deeply, you stop shrinking to fit someone else’s idea of “healthy.”

The Podcast That Shifted Everything: Brené Brown’s Unlocking Us

Let’s talk Brené. Queen of vulnerability. Patron saint of midlife awakenings. That episode of Unlocking Us where she interviews Dr. Edith Eger? Life. Changing.

Here’s what stuck:
Dr. Eger, a Holocaust survivor and psychologist (now in her 90s), says: “You can’t heal what you don’t feel.”

Whew.
Let’s pause for the women in the back.

That line hit harder than my first hot flash in August.

Because here’s the thing—real wellness isn’t just about moving your body or drinking more water (though, yes, please do that). It’s about emotional liberation. It’s about noticing the stories we tell ourselves and asking, “Who wrote this script, and why am I still performing it?”

Midlife is Your Permission Slip

At Total U Living, we believe the second half of life isn’t a crisis—it’s a clarion call.

It’s when you stop settling for scraps and start feasting on the fullness of who you really are.

It’s when “wellness” stops being punishment (read: kale and guilt) and starts being pleasure (read: walks with friends, afternoon naps, solo dance parties, and the radical act of saying “no”).

You’re allowed to:

  • Feel deeply (without apologizing)
  • Rest often (without guilt)
  • Reimagine your life (without asking permission)

Midlife is the moment you get to toss the old rulebook and write your own. With glitter pens. In ALL CAPS.

A Few Wellness Truths We’re Living By Now:

  • “Progress, not perfection” isn’t a cop-out. It’s a mantra.
  • Wine can be self-care. So can skipping wine.
  • Your Fitbit doesn’t define your worth.
  • Laughter is medicine. So is therapy. So is that extra slice of cake you shared with a friend while talking about both.

In Case You Need the Reminder Today…

You are not too old.
You are not behind.
You are not broken.

You are blooming. And that takes courage. And community. And yes, probably some magnesium.

So, grab your earbuds, cue up Brené’s podcast, and go take a walk with yourself. Or lie on the couch and stare at the ceiling for a bit. That counts too.

Just remember: This chapter?

It’s not a wind-down. It’s a wake-up.
